Since usually only one player at a time joins the game, I believe it would be a good idea to put in server-based bots that can play with or against a player or another bot. This would keep newcomers who usually join alone entertained and online, hopefully until another player joins. This would also give newcomers some useful training and would allow them to play with more experienced players without the frustration of multiple, consistent deaths and lack of any hope of accomplishment or advancement in the game due to lack of knowledge of the gameplay, since frustration usually leads to newcomers losing interest in playing CTF. The purpose of this is to encourage newcomers to play CTF so that we can have consistent or daily players (Think of MyneManiacs, for example). More players on the server would be more fun for all of us.
So how should this bot system work? Each team should always have around 1 or 2 bots, so there should be a maximum of 4 bots playing at any time. Bots should be added or removed when the teams become unbalanced. Once there are at least 4 players (including bots) in a team, bots should no longer be added to that team until its size lowers again. Killing a bot in any way does not count as killing a player and should not affect any player stats. Bots cannot dominate or take revenge on any player, and any player cannot do the same to a bot. Killing a bot that is carrying a flag will not count as a flag carrier kill and as a stalemate-ender. Killing a bot in any way will also only give a small fraction or none of the points normally obtained from kills by that way. Dying by a bot will not count as any death by a player. In other words, bots do not count as players and will not affect player stats. Playing a game with and/or against bots, however, does count as an actual game.
So, what do you guys think then? Any suggestions?
