From my experience the pillar technique has evolved with the counterpillar technique. Most people are fairly good from height, in terms of the game there is a reason why people still pillar over flags to make them harder to approach. It also creates another angle of attack, adding to the potency of 2v1s, as you cannot keep eyes above you and on the ground at the same time, making the situation all more about feel. I believe a lot of the current meta is based around playing in 2v1s, whether stalling or trading as the 1 or closing out the kill as the 2. From what I have noticed people are much better at playing these setups safely, making the 1 lose almost all the time.
